Addressing the 26th convocation of University of Rajasthan (UoR), held after 25 years, the governor suggested that the word be replaced with ‘mangal’ which signifies wellbeing.
“I have got full faith and respect for Rabindranath Tagore, but the term adhinayak praises angerji shashak and it should be replaced with words ‘jana mana gana mangal gaye,” he said.
Earlier, the governor had struck a controversial note by suggesting that Mughal emperor Akbar was an “outsider” and could not be an inspiration for students.
The veteran leader, known for his rightist linings, once again emphasised on the need to glorify erstwhile Mewar ruler Maharana Pratap and other Hindu warriors. “Victoria was not great; it was Jhansi ki Rani who fought battles. Aurangzeb was not great; it was Shivaji who should be honored. We should get inspired from (Maharana) Pratap’s stories of valor,” Singh said.
The chancellor of Rajasthan University also called upon universities to make examination process free of copying and cheating practices to improve the standard and values of degrees that the students obtain. He awarded doctorate degrees to five researchers and 72 gold medalists from 1992 to 2014.
On Tuesday, the Rajasthan University distributed about two million degrees pending from 1992 to 2014. The degrees were distributed simultaneously at the same time from 53 nodal centers across the state.
In Jaipur, the programme was attended by minister of higher education Kalicharan Saraf and minister of primary and secondary education Vasudev Devnani, vice chancellor Hanuman Singh Bhati and other officials of the university in the presence of degree and gold medal awardees at the newly built university convocation center.
Speaking on the occasion, Hanuman Singh Bhati made pitch for central university status for RU. “We have worked tirelessly for the past one month to organise this mega event and we have been trying to make the university a world class institution. I sincerely hope that one day RU will get the tag of central university,” he said.
The PhD awardees and gold medalist were asked to report for the event in a formal dress code of white, which was a departure from the normal black overcoats worn by graduates.
“The black gown is a symbol of oppression and slavery. I would like to congratulate the university administration for introducing a new dress code this time,” said minister of primary and secondary education Vasudev Devnani.
PhD was awarded to five researchers and 72 gold medalists from 1992 to 2014 by governor Kalyan Singh.
