Staff Reporter
C.S. Gangadharan
THRISSUR:
C.S. Gangadharan, freedom fighter, former MLA and State president of
the Kerala Freedom Fighters' Association, died at a private hospital
here on Sunday. He was 80.
The end came around 12.15 p.m.
Authorities did not allow Gangadharan to appear for intermediate
examinations because he wore khadi and was involved in the freedom
struggle. He was an activist of the Praja Mandalam and the Vidyarthi
Congress.
Gangadharan considered freedom fighter Mathayi Manjooran as his guide.
When Manjooran was arrested by the police and placed in the Viyyur jail,
Gangadharan led an agitation in protest. Gangadharan was brutally
assaulted by the police and jailed. He was released from prison a day
before the country became free from British rule.
In 1952, he married Vijayalakshmi, granddaughter of Chief Secretary of
Cochin State Komattil Achutha Menon. Gangadharan saw the inter-caste
marriage as a revolutionary move.
He was at the forefront of the Kerala Socialist Party. In 1970, he was
elected to the Kerala Assembly from the Irinjalakuda constituency with
the support of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters.
